Pregnancy-Related Lab Tests

Pregnancy tests help confirm pregnancy, monitor maternal health, and detect potential complications.

1. Pregnancy Confirmation Tests:

  1. Urine Pregnancy Test (hCG Test): Detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone in urine.
  2. Serum Beta-hCG Test: Measures exact hCG levels in blood to confirm pregnancy and estimate gestational age.

2. Routine First-Trimester Tests (0–12 Weeks):

  1. Complete Blood Count (CBC): Checks for anemia, infections, and platelet levels.
  2. Blood Group & Rh Factor Test: Determines compatibility and risk of Rh incompatibility.
  3. Urine Routine & Culture: Detects urinary tract infections (UTIs), protein, and glucose levels.
  4. Thyroid Function Tests (TSH, FT3, FT4): Ensures proper thyroid function for fetal development.
  5. Random Blood Sugar (RBS) or Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS): Screens for gestational diabetes risk.
  6. HIV Test (ELISA or Rapid Test): Detects maternal HIV status for early intervention.
  7. Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) & Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV) Tests: Screens for viral infections.

  1. Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT): Diagnoses gestational diabetes.
  2. Triple Marker Test (AFP, hCG, Estriol) / Quad Marker Test (+ Inhibin A): Assesses risk for Down syndrome and neural tube defects.
  3. Anomaly Scan (Ultrasound): Detects fetal structural abnormalities.
  4. Urine Protein Test: Monitors for preeclampsia (high protein in urine).

4. Third-Trimester Tests (28–40 Weeks):

  1. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Test: Detects Streptococcus agalactiae, which can cause newborn infections.
  2. Non-Stress Test (NST): Monitors fetal heart rate and movement.
  3. Doppler Ultrasound: Evaluates fetal blood flow and placenta function.
  4. Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI): Measures amniotic fluid levels.
